Task: Analyze Options and Pick Solution
A problem within a defined IT architecture or system has been identified. The problem has been clarified, now solution options are analyzed and the recommended solution is documented.
Disciplines: UAM IT Architecture
Purpose

A new technology has been identified and this task examines its possible use within the system or enterprise. This task examines the new technology, defines possible uses, and then defines its possible impacts on the existing IT architecture. These impacts may be at the Business level (e.g. new business opportunity), Logical level (e.g. a greatly revised IT architecture is needed) or the Technical level (e.g. the new technology is a simple substitute for existing technology, but with benefits).

Main Description

The identified problem has been analyzed and precisely defined. Now possible solutions are documented and compared. The following steps are followed to ensure the resulting solution does indeed solve the problem:

  1. Create a list of possible solutions to the problem;
  2. Analyze the proposed solutions in terms of cost, pros, cons, etc.;
  3. Pick the best solution to the problem and document it in detail.

If not solution can be found and agreed then the issue is escalated to a higher authority.

Steps
Create a list of possible solutions

The domain experts and architects analyze the documented problem and develop a list of possible solutions. Each proposed solution is only examined enough at this point to ensure that it will indeed solve the problem.

Analyze the proposed solutions
In depth analysis of the proposed solutions is now done. All aspects are looked at, from feasibility to costs. Pros and cons are noted for each one.
Pick the best solution
The best solution is chosen based upon a number of factors, including but not limited to cost, impacts and feasibility. More description of the chosen solution is added if necessary.
