Main Description
A Business Need in this context is a high-level need for addition, change or augmentation of a portion of the business. A
business strategy or goal is the likely driver for the definition of a business need that could be viewed as the business
level equivalent of a project. In other words, the business has decided that some action is needed to support agreed
business goals or strategy. This is described in a business need (or requirement), which may be known by some other name
within the organization.
Gate 0 is the early identification of IT architecture related issues and opportunities based upon the documented Business
Need. IT architects review the Business Need and provide advice regarding probable impacts on the current IT architecture,
opportunities for leveraging current IT, or for the introduction of new IT.
