Work Product Descriptor (Artifact): Migration Plan

This artifact describes a Migration Plan from the current state to the target architecture. This plan is based upon dependencies between:

Components in the existing architecture;
Components in the target architecture;
Components in an existing architecture and those in a target architecture.

Each step required to move the IT architecture from the current state to the target architecture is described.

Main Description

The migration plan defines the steps required to move the IT architecture from it's current state to the target architecture. The plan does not include any resource estimates, just a description of the required steps. Resourcing and other issues are to be address by a project manager or other similar implementation planning effort.

The migration plan is based upon a dependency analysis that identified the relationships between the items defined in the gap analysis. This logically ordered the gaps based upon the business needs and priorities, the state of the current systems, and upon the implementation dependencies in the target architecture.

Brief Outline

The migration document is composed of five basic parts, plus a glossary. The outline of the document is:

1. Introduction

Identifies the purpose, background, and objectives of the migration plan.

2. Overall Plan

The overall plan is outlined, with each step defined and in sequence. Dependencies are also defined.

3. Data Migration

This section defines any special considerations with respect to the need to migrate data to a new model or to a new repository.

4. Business Processes

This section defines any special considerations with respect to the need to migrate to new business processes.

5. Systems Deployment

This section defines any special considerations with respect to the need to migrate to new business processes.

6. Glossary

The glossary defines important terms used in the architecture or project.
